CANON HISTORY: Vella was born in the town of Sugar Bunting, formerly known as Steel Bunting. Steel Bunting was, frankly, a town of badass warriors. Over time, the generation of warriors died out leaving behind a town of bakers. Like every other town in the world, the citizens of Sugar Bunting sacrificed several "maidens" to monsters known as Mogs. The Mogs appear from the Plague Dams every 14 years to eat maidens. Vella, a descendant of the Tartine bakers and the Beastender warriors was selected as one of five maidens to be delivered this time. As the decades progressed, the Maiden's Feast itself is treated more like a beauty pageant than a somber affair. Maidens have to be beautiful, suave, and appealing to the townspeople to "deserve" this high honor. Vella meeting these qualifications required extensive "Maiden Training" which instilled a desire to please her town in every maiden. However, Vella began to have doubts about her role. At the encouragement of her warrior grandfather (a veteran of Steel Bunting), she began to question whether they could simply kill the monster.
In Act I, on the day of the Maiden's Feast, Vella was initially willing to sacrifice herself for her town. However, upon seeing the monster Mog Chothra eat a maiden and come back for more, she became visibly enraged and escaped the Feast in order to kill the monster herself. In essence, Vella knowingly abandoned her town because she wanted to save lives and kill a monster. She traveled to a city in the clouds called Meriloft, a lumberjack's cabin in a forest of talking trees, and Shellmound, a beachside fishing town. Stealing and trading dozens of items on her travels, she managed to cobble together a death ray from a destroyed spaceship and fired it at Mog Chothra. The beast fell to the ground and a confused teenager stepped out. Mog Chothra was a spaceship all along. In an attempt to punch what she saw as the source of her problems, Vella ended up trapped in the ship as it repaired itself and took off.
In Act II, Vella journeyed through the "Mog", encountering a variety of robots and other things designed to trick its pilots into kidnapping girls. She quickly discovered that the Mogs were designed by an elitist, xenophobic group of mutants known as the Thrush. Basically the Thrush game plan was 1) send crews of families on a "space mission" to "save" faraway creatures. 2) Get maidens. 3) Blend maidens in a health drink to keep the Thrush healthy and breeding. 4) Be weirdly sexual about all of this. 5) Rinse and repeat. Here, the reason for all of Vella's struggles and difficulties were presented before her, providing to her an unexpected opportunity to destroy it all right here and now. Needles to say, Vella became very eager to beat up every single Thrush.
Allying herself with the ship's Captain Hope and its robots, she built a bomb and dropped it in the Plague Dams to destroy their facilities. During their attempt to escape of the explosion, the ship crashed into another Mog. Shay had been rebuilding a ship to save his mom, with Vella's family sticking around for the ride. The two families successfully managed to save each other and land somewhat safely, as well as beat up the Thrush for good measure. With the Thrush's evil base gone, Vella happily returned to Sugar Bunting with a bunch of new friends.
CANON PERSONALITY: Vella is best described after punching a Thrush agent: "I thought you were a baker?!" "Well yeah. I can do both." On one side of her family, a long line of warriors. On the other, bakers. She sees no conflict between these positions and embraces both roles whole-heartedly, wearing a cute pink dress while she tries to punch and stab people.
The "helpful baker" side of herself is shown repeatedly. She's largely friendly with people and frequently helps them out with their troubles. Her entire journey begins due to her outrage seeing other girls eaten by a monster, despite them treating her like dirt earlier. Most of the people she encounters her react as though she's a deluded menace for attempting to kill Mog Chothra, but she expresses sympathy for their individual plights more often than not. She encourages other former maidens to believe in their self-worth and fight the Mog and does her best to help Curtis the Lumberjack with his fear of trees.
Despite her kindness, she's also a fierce warrior who loves a fight. In almost every conversation, she starts off by casually asking "hey, wanna help me kill a monster? No? Cool, I'll figure something else out." She spends a portion of Act II looking for explosives, just in case she needs it (which she did). Upon told she's about to accidentally make a death ray, she chirps "yay!" While she can find peaceful solutions, she greatly prefers quick, often violent or mean-spirited methods. She easily befriended a talking knife over their shared love of stabbing.
Her fondness for quick solutions tends to make her a little impatient. Hope tries to warn her about the dangers of making a bomb, only for Vella to talk over her and brush off her concerns. Upon encountering an angry talking tree that she needs sap from, she promptly makes him puke rather than talk things out and calm him down. (She can even make him puke multiple times if the player wants to. For funsies). She's also incredibly stubborn, sticking to a plan or mindset despite all evidence to the contrary. When the two ships crashed into each other, despite knowing they weren't actually monsters, Vella began planning to stop the Mogs from "mating".
That said, her determination, kindness, and quick thinking tend to be her best attributes. She may make a lot of mistakes, but she'll do whatever it takes to save the day.

As a fighter, her strength is her agility and endurance. She dodges several blows from a Thrush agent before knocking him down, balances herself on a giant bird, and easily runs around avoiding monster attacks on frequent basis.

PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: While the original Vella was trained to be dainty, I think this Vella had more freedom to pursue athletic interests. As such, she's more physically fit, losing some of her speed for some muscle.

AU HISTORY: I did in fact have Vella in this game back in early 2017, so a large portion of this will be from the first app with some differences in the year and a half I've been away from Recolle.
Vella grew up in a pretty small, relatively normal town. Her family ran a local bakery and made enough to live pretty decently. With several siblings to help out, the family business was going steady. Vella's childhood was peaceful and stress-free, providing her with plenty of freedom to express herself. Without a need to be dainty or years of society telling her to sacrifice herself for them, Vella was allowed to develop her own interests. As such, while influenced by her baking family, Vella could find her own way in the world. She tried out for sports, played for some elementary school team's, and generally enjoyed more free life.
Around middle school, Vella got into a bunch of fights with some bullies in an attempt to save some poor sap. Said bullies turned out to be the kids of some businessmen who were very important to the town's economy, who vocally discussed possibly leaving the town at some point. The townspeople didn't exactly appreciate hearing that news and the bakery lost a bunch of customers. The Tartine business fell apart, forcing them to move. Vella was guilt ridden for the result of her actions and immensely bitter to a town that she felt betrayed her family.
The Tartines moved to Recollé to live with Granny Tartine and restart the business. The whole family has adjusted over the years and regained a good income. The problem is Granny Tartine is generally awful and judgemental, constantly deriding Vella for not being a "proper young lady." Her previously supportive parents often failed to interrupt or object to these lectures. Already stressed out from the move, Vella began to distance herself from her family. Hoping to take out her anger, she finds herself joining some bad crowds. She gains a particular fondness for bar brawls and street fights, despite, you know, being a sixteen year old girl. These fights often lead to more disapproval from Grandma Tartine, leading Vella to search out for more fights and repeating the cycle again and again.
While she was still on relatively good terms with her family in 2017, I think in the time since that relationship has heavily fractured. Vella's probably considering dropping school and running off, despite her house still being fairly safe and welcoming. But she feels very constrained by the bakery business and the overbearing presence of Grandma Tartine. Vella has the opportunity to keep living a normal middle class life but is willingly pushing it away out of some misplaced anger and resentment. That said, she still loves her family deep down and doesn't wish them any permanent harm.
AU PERSONALITY: Without the years of cultural indoctrination, Vella's emotional stability should have taken a huge leap upward. However, most of Vella's original problems could be taken out on one front: Mog Chothra and the Thrush. OU-Vella embraced impulsiveness after a life of control and a chance to erase her problems, while AU-Vella naturally grew into an impulsive woman. Thus, while her entire society wasn't united in killing her, it also meant she was ill-prepared when her violence held extreme consequences. Similarly, OU-Vella easily balanced both the warrior and baker sides of her life with the explicit approval of her parents, while AU-Vella struggles with the two sides of herself and her family.
Without a single place to vent her frustrations, Vella's need to lash out has been upped considerably. Her rage has transformed from a single-minded quest ("Wanna help me kill Mog Chothra? No? Okay.") to an aimless, frequently shifting force. ("Wanna start a fight? No? How 'bout I punch you instead and start that fight anyway?") There's no simple, violent, easy way to eliminate her problems and violence has only made her life worse. Despite this fact, she sees fighting as the solution to her frustrations and vastly prefers it to peaceful negotiation. More bitter and cynical, she has far more trouble brushing off insults, pushes back against any kind of authority figure, and is completely unable to comprehend how the world could be so repeatedly unfair. In her return to the network, Vella would probably lash out or stifle down her feelings to how things have changed while she wasn't paying attention.
That said, she's still sympathetic to people's plights and will lend a helping hand (or treats!) if needed. She may be quick to anger, but she doesn't like the idea of people faced with unfair situations or circumstances. She can't make the world fair through force, but making other people feel better makes her feel better.
